The goal is not a “reset” or perhaps a courtesy reveal for the wide cameras. And a key character may be distant, although unlikely to be forgotten.
President Joe Biden faces the best moment of his presidency so far on Wednesday, with a particularly choreographed summit in Geneva with Russian President Vladimir Putin. It's a golden, high-stakes chance for Biden to place his personal stamp on American leadership — and part of a case Biden is desperate to make.
Putin doesn't want Biden to ignore his predecessor and doesn't need Trump to ignore him, both — even playing into the former president's ego in the run-up to the summit.
For its part, Biden White's condominium has made it clear that among the people the president has consulted with is Fiona Hill, who took on Trump's appearance through her infamous joint news convention with Putin. Hill would later say he considered faking a medical emergency to distract the media when Trump sided with Putin in the trial of his personal intelligence community.
The incredible latitude of considerations that Biden and Putin have to discuss are reminders of how US policies toward Russia have changed with alternating administrations. Hacker attacks, human rights abuses, diplomatic expulsions, the build-up of armed forces in Ukraine – these areas and others show how far the world is from the mutual admiration that Trump and Putin publicly exchanged.
Putin and Biden are expected to hold separate briefings on Wednesday to put their personal spin on what happens behind closed doors, in meetings that could span 4 hours or more.
“I’ve been doing this for a long time,” Biden reminded reporters this week, announcing that he was being cautious in what he mentioned about Putin ahead of the summit.
Biden gave Putin everything he wanted even through the summit, despite Putin also meeting with American presidents for a long time.

Attorney Merrick Garland revealed the Justice branch's plan to disrupt, deter and address the root causes of domestic terrorism – which more specifically will aim to combat violent white supremacist extremism.
Garland's announcement came with a warning that Republicans, particularly people who cite free speech considerations in relation to caution regarding domestic terrorism investigations, might also welcome.
“In America, adopting a hateful ideology is not illegal,” Garland said Tuesday.
The strategy calls for increased information sharing between state and native law enforcement companies with federal officials and the implementation of a new musical home terror outfit.
