This year, the federal government announced the resumption of the Farmácia Popular do Brasil program. The idea is to expand access to free medicine and include more pharmacies in the program, especially in needier cities.
Previously, the program already offered free medication for asthma, high blood pressure and diabetes.
Now, the intention is to increase the list of free medicines and continue with the option of purchasing other treatments at more affordable prices, in a kind of partnership between the government and pharmacies.

News about the Bolsa Família and Popular Pharmacy Program!

Good news for Bolsa Família beneficiaries! Now, the 55 million Brazilians registered in the program have free access to 40 different medicines offered by Popular Pharmacy.
To pick up your medicine, just go to a participating pharmacy with your prescription, ID and CPF in hand.
The system already automatically recognizes who is part of Bolsa Família, so you don't need to worry about additional registration.
Women Get More Benefits
Another legal change is aimed at women, in the new Farmácia Popular scheme, medicines for osteoporosis and contraceptives are now free for everyone.
Previously, around 5 million women had to pay half the price for these medicines, but now they can get them at no cost.
Special Attention to Indigenous Peoples
A great initiative of the program is the inclusion of indigenous peoples. The objective is to provide easier access to basic medicines, which were previously only available in special indigenous health districts (DSEI). Now, all 40 medicines from Farmácia Popular are free for indigenous peoples.
One of the ideas is to choose a representative of the indigenous community to collect the medicines, avoiding unnecessary travel.
What’s more, you don’t need a CPF to receive assistance! This new scheme begins with a pilot project in Yanomami territory and will later expand to other regions, with the help of indigenous health councils.
Free Medicines for All
Remembering that medicines for asthma, hypertension and diabetes remain free for everyone through Farmácia Popular.
The news doesn't stop there! The government will allow more pharmacies to join the program, prioritizing cities that are part of Mais Médicos.
There are 811 municipalities, mainly in the North and Northeast, that can request to participate. The expectation is that by the end of the year Farmácia Popular will be present in 93% of the national territory, reaching 5,207 municipalities.
What medications are available?

Let's talk about the medicines available in the Farmácia Popular program, in a simple and direct way, so that you can understand everything without complications.
For those with asthma, the program offers ipratropium bromide, beclomethasone dipropionate and salbutamol sulfate.
For diabetes, metformin hydrochloride, glibenclamide and human insulin are available.
And if you suffer from hypertension, you can count on atenolol, amlodipine besylate, captopril, among others.
In addition, there are medicines with co-participation, which are free for those who receive Bolsa Família.
These include a variety of contraceptives, medicines for high cholesterol such as simvastatin, treatments for Parkinson's disease and glaucoma, as well as items for incontinence (such as geriatric diapers), osteoporosis and rhinitis.
And something new: for those over 65 years of age and suffering from type 2 diabetes associated with cardiovascular diseases, the program now offers dapagliflozin.
