Let's go?

What is MEI?

Before we take you step by step, let's first understand the concept of MEI and how it works.

MEI is an acronym that refers to Individual Microenterprise and is a work model created with the aim of removing people who worked informally as self-employed workers.

You probably know many people who work as MEI, whether salespeople, hairdressers and even sweets.

The majority of professionals who were informal registered with MEI and began to obtain various social security benefits.

Furthermore, when you become a MEI you receive a CNPJ, which is a National Register of Legal Entities and then becomes part of Simples Nacional.

Thus, all taxes that need to be paid will be implemented in the DAS, a payment guide to the MEI.

How to open MEI?

Opening an MEI is very simple and the entire process takes place online, without major bureaucracy.

To start the process you need to access the Entrepreneur Portal and follow the steps below:

#1 – Understand the conditions for Abri MEI:

The first thing you need to check before opening an MEI is the conditions required for this.

Even though it is a very simple process, not everyone is able to do it, so be careful.

One of the requirements is that you cannot have any participation as a partner or even owner of another company.

Furthermore, your turnover, as MEI, cannot be greater than R$ 81 thousand. There is a bill for 2023, which aims to increase this ceiling to R$ 130 thousand. However, it needs to go through the Chamber process.

Another point that deserves attention is the permitted activities, that is, not all professions are classified as MEI.

In this case, you will need to check if the activity you want exists and place it as the main one.

If you work with more than one thing, then you can choose one main thing and choose up to 15 secondary options.

If you meet the requirements, you are ready to move on to the next step.

#2 – Create your MEI account:

On the Entrepreneur Portal, which you can access clicking here, in the first image below that says “I Want to Be MEI”.

A page will then open for you giving you a general summary of the term and offering extra information, such as:

  • Who can be MEI;
  • What you need to know before becoming MEI;
  • Entrepreneurial Journey;
  • Required documents, etc.

Run down and next to the “Prepare yourself” box you will find “Formalize yourself”, click on it to proceed to the next step.

Okay, when you follow these steps, the Gov.br website will open and this is where you must register, if you don't have an account yet.

#3 – Complete registration on the Entrepreneur Portal:

After registering, you will need to authorize access to your data through the Entrepreneur Portal.

To do this, you will need to confirm some data and, in this case, you will need to provide your voter registration card, your Income Tax declaration or your telephone number.

To finalize access authorization, an SMS code will be sent to you.

#4 – Determine a name for your MEI company and activity:

Now the best part has come, where you must create a fancy name for your company and select the type of activity you intend to carry out.

Additionally, you need to mention where you intend to open your company, such as:

  • At home;
  • Business address;
  • Act as a street vendor;
  • Door to door;
  • By Internet.

It is important that you provide the most accurate information possible within your framework, avoiding causing problems in the future.

#5 – Add an address:

After entering the business name, it is important that you select a ZIP code for your home address.

Next, you need to enter the zip code of the location where the company will operate.

#6 – Issue your CCMEI:

By following all the previous steps, you are ready to issue your CCMEI, which is nothing more than an Individual Microentrepreneur Status Certificate.

After carefully reading all your data, you must select all mandatory declarations for MEI.

After that, your CCMEI will be issued. He is the one who proves that you are a MEI and presents a CNPJ, in addition to a registration number with the Commercial Board.
