Report highlights examples of child abuse and hygiene issues on Twitch.
“"It seems we are still not providing the level of protection we are aiming for," the platform responded.
A new, specific document from Bloomberg highlighted the number of babies circulating on Twitch and the amount of money owed to adult predators who follow and interact with them.
The research includes several examples of children being asked by adult users to engage in explicit or inappropriate activities and functional dances or “challenges” during the live stream. After the spoken streams ended, the recordings are often viewed through hundreds of other streams – far exceeding what would be expected for small measurement channels.
The document suggests that this is the result of "a lot" of money owed, believed to be used by predators who have amassed follower lists with "more than a thousand children on their following lists.".
Twitch does not formally allow children under 13 to use its features, although – as with all social media – this poses a challenge to the police.
According to the article, Twitch stated that it has made "extensive investments" over the past two years to "stay ahead of bad actors and prevent customers under the age of 13 from accessing Twitch.".
Demonstrated examples of solicitation are disclosed through Twitch's own law enforcement response group – which, according to him, has quadrupled in size in the last two years – and passed on to imperative authorities.
However, with Bloomberg publishing alleged recent examples of poaching, the difficulty seems to persist.
“Even a single illustration of grooming is abhorrent to us, and whether or not it’s valid, the statistics you mention demonstrate that we don’t seem to be providing the level of protection we’re trying to yet – which is deeply disturbing,” wrote Twitch product director Tom Verrilli. “This work is vitally important to everyone at Twitch, and we’re not going to stop.”
The document delves into further aspects of Twitch's upward momentum in streaming – and stories of preparation – during the pandemic period, and the problems Twitch has faced in the past on social media regarding policing live content. It's currently featured on Bloomberg and is worth checking out.
