Do you know where to watch the South American Rugby Pre-Olympic? To guarantee their participation in the next Olympic Games, the women's and men's teams, Yaras and Tupis, are participating in the pre-Olympics of the sport in Montevideo, Uruguay.
The tournament takes place this Saturday and Sunday, on the 17th and 18th of June, at the Charrua stadium, which has an artificial pitch. The objective of the game is to win a place for each gender at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
Brazilian teams are determined to fight for qualification and represent the country on the Olympic stage once again.
How are Brazilian teams doing in the competition?
A Brazilian team female, the Yaras, will be seeking their 21st title in the competition.
In the women's tournament of the South American Rugby Pre-Olympic, the Yaras will face teams from Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay.
The format of the matches will be straight points. The champion team qualifies for the Olympic Games, while the finalist and third place will guarantee a place in the global repechage that will take place in 2024.
This repechage will define the last Olympic spot and will have a date and location to be determined.
In the case of the men's tournament, the Pre-Olympic competition system is different. The Tupis will face teams from Chile, Colombia, Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay in the initial phase, in which everyone plays against everyone else.
In the next phase, the last two placed will compete for fifth and sixth positions.
The third and fourth placed teams will play for the bronze medal, while the first two will compete for the final and the Olympic spot.
The winning team will guarantee their place, but the defeated finalist and third-placed team will have another opportunity to qualify for the next Games, through the global repechage in 2024.
Just like the women's repechage, the place and date of this repechage will be defined later.
It is important to highlight that the Argentine men's team is already qualified for Paris 2024 as it finished the 2022-2023 World Tour in second place, therefore, it will not participate in the 2023 Rugby Sevens Pre-Olympic.
