Will Smith noted that his career was destroyed on a 'hellish' ayahuasca trip before the Oscars slap.
\nBefore the infamous Oscar slap, Will Smith had a vision of his career, home, and family life slipping away while he stumbled upon the psychoactive drink ayahuasca.<\/p>\n
King Richard Smith recalled David Letterman's journey in a new episode of his Netflix show My Next Guest Needs No Introduction, which was recorded before Smith beat Chris Rock on stage during the 94th Academy Awards broadcast in March.<\/p>\n
Smith advised the longtime host that everyone began to notice a \u201cdelicate illness\u201d involving an \u201caddiction\u201d to \u201cfabric success\u201d around the time i'm Legend was released in 2007. He sought to cure himself by taking a break from work and not speaking to me for two weeks. Smith noted that the experience taught him \u201cto live with the fact that at any moment, anything else will also disappear in a single second.\u201d.<\/p>\n
Still, the Oscar winner persevered by looking inward, telling Letterman that he had taken 14 ayahuasca \u201ctrips\u201d in Peru over a period of two to 12 months.<\/p>\n

\u201cI started seeing all my money flying away, and my apartment flying away, and my career going away, and I\u2019m trying to grab my money, and my profession and my whole life are being destroyed. I\u2019m scared, and I\u2019m there, but I feel like throwing up,\u201d she recalled. \u201cI hear a voice saying, \u2018here\u2019s what the hell this is, here\u2019s what the hell existence is.' and I\u2019m like, \u2018Oh, s\u2014,\u2018 and I hear Willow yelling, 'Daddy, support me, Daddy, why can\u2019t you help me?\u2018 and I\u2019m like, 'I don\u2019t see you, child.\u201d\u201d<\/p>\n
Smith resisted, \u201cI stopped caring about my condo, I stopped caring about my career, and that I get to the point where I\u2019ve settled down, and the voice continues to be 100%; however, I hear Willow screaming, my money continues to fly away, no matter how I am\u2026 Totally calm, even though there\u2019s hell going on in my mind.\u201d<\/p>\n
During the journey, the actor stated: \u201cI realized that whatever else happens in my existence, I will deal with it. I can deal with any adult I lose, I will address anything that goes wrong in my lifestyle, I will deal with anything else in my marriage, I will address anything else that this existence has to offer. This is part of the psychological practice that happens with ayahuasca.\u201d<\/p>\n

The main lesson for Smith was that \u201c99 percent of the things you get anxious about under no circumstances happen. Ninety-nine percent of your pain and misery are all self-generated; or not, now is not necessary.\u201d He said, \u201cI developed a confidence and a love for myself that I never had before. I have confidence that I am okay, regardless of what happens.\u201d<\/p>\n

Smith had to deal with this indescribable one percent threat to his profession over the past 12 months, while enduring public outrage for slapping the Oscar winner.<\/p>\n
Following the incident, Smith issued an apology and resigned his membership in the Academy of Graphic Arts and Sciences of the Movement. He was then banned from attending Academy-affiliated events \u2013 including the Oscars \u2013 for the next decade.<\/p>\n
