Core inflation stood at 3.4% yoy in July, compared to 3% in June.

Liew Chee Yoong, an assistant finance professor at the U.S. school in Malaysia and also an analyst at the Center for Market Training, told StarBiz that he expects NPLs to rise towards the end of the year if inflation continues to climb further.

He noted that rising inflation would dampen customer spending and reduce profits. He observed that when earnings fall, the ability of agencies to repay operator debts could be diminished.

This increases NPLs, he noted, observing that the rising inflation rate further reduces people's disposable spending, as well as their circulation of money available for private use.

When someone's cash flow is reduced, Liew noted that this decreases the adult's ability to meet debt payments and consequently leads to an increase in non-performing loans (NPLs).

He expects the cost of one-day hedging (OPR) to increase by 25 basis points (bps) if inflation continues to rise this year.

“"If this happens, it could increase borrowing expenses, and the rise in mortgage lending by the banking gadget could be negatively impacted due to increased loan prices.".

“When the cost of borrowing increases, the demand for bank loans decreases, as groups and individuals who are willing to take greater risks prefer to invest the money they have obtained in activity rate products, which can yield them better returns as a result of the increase in hobby prices, preferring to take out a personal loan and pay better for their hobby in their accounts,” Liew said.

Growth in commercial bank mortgages continued to improve from 5.6% at the end of June to 5.9% at the end of July. Business lending grew by 3% in the first seven months of this year.

Moody's buyers, in a contemporary filing referring to inflation, would result in higher interest rates, thus widening the net hobby margins (NIMs) of ASEAN banks. Young, he said, asset risks would also increase, with problem loans rising modestly.

Wong Yin Ching, co-head of monetary institution rankings at RAM Bhd, stated that there was an expansion in NIMs in the latest round of economic effects on the banking sector in the second quarter, supported by a 25 basis point increase in OPR in May. .

NIM is a measure of the difference between hobby profits generated with the help of banks and the activity paid to depositors. A much wider NIM indicates higher profits for the banks.

The overall NIM of eight selected local banking firms under RAM's insurance rose 5 bps compared to the previous quarter, to 2.33%.

The margins mentioned by Wong are expected to increase even further amid the 25 bps increase in July and the company's anticipation of two larger increases (of 25 bps each) for leisure in 2022.

“"While higher lending activity may also moderate credit demand somewhat, it may not significantly derail the current mortgage boom. Lending has accelerated with the help of a robust 5.9% year-on-year in July 2022, partly due to a low base effect as the country came down from a strict core lockdown over the past 12 months.".

“We are maintaining our previous conservative projection of loan expansion from 4.5% to 5% in 2022,” Wong said.

Regarding the improved asset inflow, she said that rising inflationary power and larger loan installments would test the repayment capacity of certain borrowers, once the massive regulatory relief measures had expired.

Those in susceptible business sectors, corporations with lower wages, and the small and medium-sized commercial enterprise sector may be more challenged. That said, she mentioned that focused loan advice with the help of banks remained available for achievable value clients.

After peaking at 28% in December 2021, the common share of assisted loans for the eight banks fell drastically to around 5% in July 2022. 2.2% by the end of the year (end of June 2022: 1.79%), which is still a process stage,” said Wong.

“"While persistently high international inflation and the consequent aggressive increases in hobby costs by crucial international banks will cast a shadow over the potential for financial growth, the profitability of Malaysian banks should remain intact.".

“"Expected margin growth and reduced provisioning expenses will help improve banks' profit efficiency, while weaker purchases and sales, investment income, and the single Cukai Makmur offset some of these positive aspects," Wong said.

Thor Boon Lee, risk director at OCBC (M) Bhd country bank, pointed out that he expects NPLs to increase, but this may not be effective due to inflation, but also from the resumption of repayment programs linked to Covid-19, the pandemic, which may cause some to be unable to afford payments on personal loans.

Regarding personal loans, he mentioned that in an environment of increasing hobbyist interest rates, the demand for loans could be affected and may see some moderation. This could also have the impact of accelerating repayment, he said.

Regarding NIM, Thor said it will be affected by the adjustment in OPR, including the expectation that OPR will be increased, which would naturally lead to a concerning NIM in a smart way.

Liew, from the United States, said that NIM could be reduced if hobby costs continued to push upwards, except at the end of the year, due to the discount in demand for bank loans. This discount would decrease banks' hobby revenue and the cost of common income assets, particularly the volume of bank loans that are lent to borrowers.

“An increase in hobby charges through the Negara financial institution will reduce the demand for bank loans via groups and individuals, as financing charges become more expensive. That said, banks should continue paying hobby charges to risk-averse depositors who prefer to put their money in banks during times of financial uncertainty like the one we are experiencing now. All of this contributes to a reduction in banks' NIM,” he stated.

Liew predicts serious challenges for local banking trade in the next 12 months. The energy crisis that European international markets are facing will increase the chances of an extreme recession occurring in Europe, he said.

He noted that this would have a spillover effect on Asian markets and negatively impact banking businesses in Asia, as well as in Malaysia.

“"Company and buyer spending may be further reduced due to this spillover effect in addition to the inflationary pressure the country is dealing with. This could further dampen the boom in lending and NIM from commercial banking in this country. Often, the outlook is challenging for the banking sector in 2022.".

“Stagflation (inflation and a slowdown in the financial system), which may be due to external financial contagion, remains a huge risk for the field in the short and medium term. Industrial banks should conduct extra stress checks to ensure they have sufficient capital to survive this possibility,” said Liew.

Meanwhile, CGS-CIMB research is reiterating its so-called "obese" outlook in the sphere, with catalyst reclassification capabilities driving a powerful increase in internet hobby earnings in 2022-2023, underpinned by the powerful personal loan boom and increases in OPR and the downward trend in provisioning for doubtful debts. The analysis is projecting a mortgage boom of 5% to 6% for 2022.

Espera-se que o setor bancário se mantenha, apesar de um aumento esperado nos empréstimos inadimplentes (NPLs) e um aumento mais lento dos empréstimos pessoais este ano, à medida que as pressões inflacionárias e os ventos contrários aumentam.
