He says Texans are paying too much in taxes and inflation-indexed fees, and if elected governor, he would enrich their regular lives with the help of expanding Medicaid and compelling businesses to pay their fair share of property taxes.

Abbott responded that O'Rourke would harm Texas' financial system, especially since he supports energy guidelines that the governor says would burden oil producers. Abbott was invited but declined to be interviewed by the editorial board.

The former congressman from El Paso told The Information that energy bills have long since increased to a standard of $$ 45 for thirty days after the Texas power grid faltered during the 2021 winter storm, leaving millions without power.

Subsequently, O'Rourke noted that Toyota's San Antonio plant needed to cancel its third shift over the next 12 months because it was consuming too much energy from the grid.

He also noted that Texans are currently paying US$$ 20 billion more in property taxes.

“"The average Texan is now paying more in taxes than the average Californian," O'Rourke noted.

O'Rourke said that Texas could obtain between US$4 billion and US$6 billion in more tax revenue by closing loopholes enjoyed through corporations. He also noted that increasing Medicaid under the relatively inexpensive Care Act would again yield US$10 billion annually in federal tax dollars paid by Texans.

This money, he said, could not simply provide property tax exemptions for homeowners, but also increase access to healthcare by reopening closed rural hospitals and freeing local governments from the responsibility of funding indigent care.

Last weekend, O'Rourke's campaign began running a statewide television ad about the need to expand Medicaid in Texas.

The Democrat also said he would increase state funding for public education, which could bring relief for native taxpayers who lack the high-powered materials to protest the estimated price increases of their properties.

“You and I, as landlords and tenants, don’t have lawyers or lobbyists capable of doing this,” O’Rourke said. “Organizations do this uniquely in the state of Texas, and now they’re not paying their fair share. A new Dallas Morning Texas information school in Tyler found that half of those surveyed “want a good deal” on legal guidelines that could lift the age restriction.
