How damaging a strike could be to the economic climate would depend on its size, but a strike lasting just a few days could lead to a cascade of events that could disrupt supply chains for weeks, trade representatives warn. A strike would also disrupt the distribution of fertilizer used on vegetation, since about half of the country's fertilizer is transported by rail. Like chlorine, fertilizer is a hazardous material that may need to be removed from the rail system starting next week if a strike is possible. For each day of the strike, it could take five to seven days for the distribution chain to recover due to restricted storage at production facilities, said Corey Rosenbusch, president of the Fertilizer Institute.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIf this isn\u2019t resolved immediately, fertilizer production will have to be reduced,\u201d Rosenbusch told reporters on his own behalf. \u201cThis could be utterly devastating for fertilizer distribution.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Retail<\/span><\/p>\n

A strike would not have a major impact on holiday demand because most retailers have already stocked their stores, warehouses, and distribution centers for the holiday rush.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

However, it can cause major disruptions in the distribution chain, especially at seaports. When cargo enters the United States by ship, it is often unloaded onto trains that take the containers to distribution centers to be transported by truck, the agents noted.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

With the railroads closed, the country could return to scenes like those seen last year, when container ships were lined up at sea, unable to enter ports to unload their cargo, leading once again to empty storage lockers and American manufacturers being unable to obtain the elements and accessories they need from foreign locations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cA rail strike, coupled with traditionally high levels of inflation, could wreak economic havoc and inflict catastrophic damage on businesses, people, consumers, and the American financial system,\u201d said Matthew Shay, the pinnacle of the National Retail Federation, in an announcement Monday. \u201cWe are in the height of the holiday season, and it is critical that retailers and other businesses can rely on these essential delivery chain partners.\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

A rail strike could once again increase gasoline prices, as oil has fallen to its lowest level since December due to the disruption it would cause to the transport of ethanol, which is used in the vast majority of fuel consumed in the U.S.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
