Have you ever heard of Pronaf? This acronym represents the National Program for Strengthening Family Agriculture, an initiative that offers financial support to small rural producers.

As its name suggests, Pronaf's main focus is to support family farmers who grow crops for their own consumption or to supply local markets.

The program appears as an evolution of other more modest initiatives aimed at encouraging small farmers.

Through Pronaf, family farmers have the opportunity to purchase equipment to modernize production, finance plantations and make essential improvements to their activities.

It is a way to boost and strengthen family farming in the country.

Benefit for family farming

The people from family farming are great at working in the fields, using their own labor and breaking a sweat.

They don't have much money to hire help or buy those fancy agricultural machines.

Despite the difficulties, family farming is key to maintaining food prices and ensuring that people have food on the table.

It is believed to have 608 million of these heroes, producing much of the food we eat on a daily basis, according to the UN.

Large farmers, on the other hand, focus on exports, moving money and creating jobs. But you know, that doesn't take away the shine of family farming, which gained prominence back in 1995 with Pronaf. These guys are essential!

How does Pronaf work?

This program has the collaboration of financial institutions, such as Rural Credit Cooperatives, BNDES and Banco da Amazônia, which grant credit to rural producers.

These institutions are partners with the Federal Government, which encourages the provision of credit lines with more favorable conditions.

This includes lower interest rates and longer payment terms depending on the agricultural activity carried out.

Therefore, it is a more beneficial option to finance these operations than seeking conventional loans.

After all, Pronaf aims to boost the development of family farming, that is, it results in the diversification of food production, the creation of more jobs, increased income and improved quality of life for the population.

To enter this, there are some requirements that are always updated. The tip is to keep an eye on the National Bank for Economic and Social Development website, because things change.

So, look, anyone who wants to participate in this program needs to be a farmer, artisanal fisherman, aquaculturist or forester.

And it's not just talking, you have to show what came with the Declaration of Aptitude for Pronaf (DAP).

This stop is requested from technical assistance companies authorized by the National Agency for Technical Assistance and Rural Extension.

It works like a rural business identity, recording everything: from territorial and production details to the farmer's personal data and the money that comes into the family.

Conditions to participate

It is important to highlight that the DAP is undergoing a replacement process, where the CAF (National Family Farming Registry) will take its place.

To be considered a rural producer, it is necessary to have a maximum of two permanent employees and rely on labor from your own family.

This includes settlers, owners, partners, tenants or squatters. In addition, there are other conditions to be met, such as:

  • Ensure that at least 50% of annual gross income comes from agricultural activities;
  • Do not have areas larger than four fiscal modules;
  • Live on the rural property or nearby;
  • Have registered, in the year prior to requesting the DAP, a gross family income of up to R$ 500 thousand, according to data from the beginning of 2023 (considering the gross value of production, income, income of any family member, among others).
