The use of telemedicine in the SUS represents the incorporation of digital and communication technologies to improve the health services offered to the population.
This method allows medical care to reach people at different levels – whether municipal, state or regional – facilitating everything from diagnoses to basic health monitoring, among other needs.
With the approval of Law 14,510, on December 27, 2022, Brazil took a big step in making telemedicine official as a valid form of medical care.
This law defines the rules for offering health services remotely, covering all professions recognized in the area by the federal administration.
What is Telesaúde Brasil Redes?
Telessaúde Brasil Redes is a government program aimed at increasing the quality of services and care in basic health within the SUS.
It uses information technology to provide support and education remotely. The program covers several areas, such as:
- Remote consultations: allows healthcare professionals, workers and administrators to ask questions about medical procedures, healthcare initiatives and other day-to-day issues in the sector;
- Remote diagnosis: makes use of digital technologies to help diagnose patients;
- Distance education: offers ways to learn through health-focused lectures, classes and courses;
- Formative Opinion: is an organized response to questions asked during remote consultations.
And what is TeleSUS?
TeleSUS is a remote consultation system created by the Ministry of Health during the COVID-19 crisis, with the aim of helping the population identify possible cases of the virus without having to leave home.
This service allows people to clarify their doubts and receive initial assistance from a healthcare professional in a practical way.

Main services of free SUS telemedicine

Free SUS Telemedicine has been a major advance, bringing innovative solutions to medical care.
See below 5 notable initiatives that make a big difference in public health:
1. ECG diagnosis by Samu
In Samu's ambulances, rescuers deal daily with critical emergencies, such as heart attacks.
To speed up care, these ambulances are equipped with electrocardiographs that send test results in real time to HCor cardiologists.
In ten years, this system allowed more than 800,000 remote diagnoses, identifying around 12,000 cases of heart attack.
2. Online Training at UNA-SUS
Tele-education is an aspect of telemedicine that offers training and updating to healthcare professionals via the internet. One of these initiatives is UNA-SUS, which provides online courses to improve SUS workers.
3. Remote Eye Screening
In 2017, a project began to reduce long waiting lines for ophthalmology consultations using telemedicine.
Until March 2021, more than 24 thousand patients were served through this initiative, receiving diagnoses and ophthalmological guidance remotely.
4. Teleconsultation via TeleSUS
Created in April 2020, during the Covid-19 pandemic, TeleSUS aims to provide remote care to the population, especially in times of social isolation.
Through a free telemedicine application and online chat, the system initially screens symptoms and, if necessary, directs you to a teleconsultation.
In just three months, this service reached more than 73 million people, with 1.8 million of them having online consultations.
5. Telemedicine as a Regular Service in São Paulo
In São Paulo, free telemedicine has been permanently adopted by the SUS since November 2021.
The measure seeks to facilitate access to health services, allowing telescreening, video consultations, monitoring of chronic patients and monitoring of special conditions, such as prenatal care.
These initiatives show how telemedicine is becoming an essential tool in the SUS, offering agile and efficient care, crucial to saving lives and improving the quality of the public health service.
